The Great Gatsby, Another Great Work of Fiction Meets Box Office Success
This Weekend the 2013 release of “The Great Gatsby” opened with $51.1 million in sales. The film has its release pushed back a few months, and has received less than favorable reviews from movie critics. This has not stopped it from opening at #2, behind “Iron 3 ” (which has captured the box 2 weeks in a row.)
Although this is the first time that younger audiences may have seen the movie in theaters, this is not the first time that it has made it to the big screen. Several different movie adaptions have been made since the original book was published. In 1924 the original book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald was released. A few years later a silent movie based on the book was released in 1926. Another two films were released in 1949 and then in then in 1974. A made for television version was released in 2000.
Like the current version, the 1974 version of “The Great Gatsby” movie received many negative reviews from the critic but was welcomed by audiences in tickets sales. The 1974 version had a $6.5 million budget and grossed over $26.5 million. This newer version has a $105 million budget and grossed over $51.1 million so far. Time will tell if this current version will be the blockbuster success like its 1974 predecessor.
